How to install Parrot OS in Oracle VM VirtualBox

What is Parrot OS?

Parrot OS is a GNU/Linux distribution that is based on Debian that can be used for development and penetration testing. The Parrot OS is developed by the Parrot Project team and was initially released on 10th April 2013. The reason that the Parrot OS is popular throughout tech enthusiasts because of its lightweight and versatility. Works flawlessly even when it's live booted using external media, unlike other Linux distribution.

A basic snapshot of this OS is shown in Figure 1.1. Notice that the UI has shown a significant distinction from other Debian based Linux distribution.

Install Parrot OS in VM VirtualBox

In this tutorial, I will show you how to install Parrot OS in a step by step guide. All the steps must be followed exactly as it is and in the correct order. In this tutorial, I have assumed that you have configured VirtualBox properly. If not, it's recommended to read the official guide before starting this tutorial. Before we get started, there is a set of requirements that needs to be fulfilled.

Requirements

  1. At least 2GB of RAM
  2. 10 GB HDD space (3GB for Downloads and 7GB for the OS)
All set? Then let's move on...

STEP 1: Visit the official Parrot Os Download Page

Click here to visit the official download page. Select the wanted version of Parrot OS you need. Download according to your requirements. If you want the general version, choose Home/Workstation version. else you can download the Security version which has more advanced programs and features that can be used. Press download after selecting the needed version. For this example, I'm downloading the Home/Workstation version.

STEP 2: Download the OVA file

After completing the first step, navigate down the download page and find the downloading section as shown in Figure 2.2. Under the topic "Virtual Appliance", we can find the download options available. Download this file under any method you prefer. This file contains the necessary components to install Parrot OS easily in VirtualBox. The file size is nearly 3GB.

STEP 3: Import the OS to VirtualBox

  • Open VirtualBox and press CTRL+I.
  • Navigate to the file that was downloaded and click next.
  • Next click import on the dialogue box.
  • This might take a while (20 mins or so).

STEP 4: Done!

Congratulations !! You have successfully installed Parrot OS on VirtualBox.
